What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When site users submit comments, we gather the data presented in the comment form, as well as their IP address and browser user agent string to aid with spam detection.

The Gravatar service may get an anonymized string derived from your email address (also known as a hash) to determine if you are using it. The privacy statement for the Gravatar service can be found at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your remark has been approved, your profile image will be seen in the context of your comment.

Media

Avoid submitting photos with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) when uploading images to a website. Visitors can download and extract any location data from the website’s photos.

Cookies

You may choose to have your name, email address, and website saved in cookies if you post a comment on our website. These are provided for your convenience so that you do not have to re-enter your information each time you post a comment. These cookies have a one-year shelf life.

If you have an account on this site and log in, we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser supports cookies. This cookie includes no personal information and is deleted when the browser is closed.

When you log in, we’ll also set up a number of cookies to store your login information and display preferences. The duration of login cookies is two days, whereas screen options cookies are one year. If “Remember Me” is selected, your login will survive for two weeks. When you exit your account, the login cookies are deleted.

If you update or publish an article, your browser will store an extra cookie. This cookie contains no personally identifiable information and merely reflects the post ID of the article you just updated. It expires in one day.

Embedded content from other websites

This site’s articles may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). The behavior of embedded content from other websites is the same as if the visitor had visited the other website.

These websites may gather information about you, employ cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with embedded material, including tracking your activity if you have an account and are logged in to the website.

Analytics

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

How long we retain your data

The comment and associated metadata are retained indefinitely if you leave one. This allows us to detect and approve any subsequent comments without holding them in a moderation queue.

Whenever a user registers on our website, we also retain the personal information they submit in their profile. All users can at any moment see, modify, or remove their personal information (except they cannot change their username). Administrators of the website can also view and update this information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site or have posted comments, you can request to receive a file containing the personal information we possess on you, including any information you have provided to us. You may also request that we delete your personal information. This excludes any information we are compelled to store for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
